Trip to Newcastle
So today, we took the Teikyo students to Newcastle. They seemed to have a lot of fun - our group went to China town for lunch, and then a big shopping centre where they made full use of Poundland and shops selling cheap clothes. I was amazed at how cheap some shops are in Newcastle! I really should go more often. Some of the day's highlights were:
- I had Red Bean Ice at this extremely nice Chinese restaurant. It's exactly like a zenzai (red bean soup) ice cream, the sort of thing you'd expect to find in Japan. They give you an extra wide straw to suck up the beans with!
- Listening to Richard translate between Chinese, Japanese and English simultaneously. Rather impressive.
- When we said that we were 21 to one of the Teikyo girls, she said, "Oh, I'm 21 too. Plus 1."
- Watching the expression on the face of the woman in the sportswear shop, when she saw two of the Teikyo guys buy identical Sunderland football shirts, then proceed to put them on over their clothes outside the shop.
- When the Teikyo students want to attract my attention, if they can't remember my name they call out "Mattorikusu!" (Matrix) or "Batwoman!" That's now become my official nick name.
Yay, Phil will be here soon! And we'll be seeing the Edward Scissorhands Ballet tomorrow!
